Amazon Just Spent Millions Applying For Domain Names. Why?

Post by Admin on Sun Feb 09, 2014 5:08 pm

Currently, there are 22 generic top-level domains, with an additional 250 country-specific domains (like .es and .ly). In its original announcement, ICANN noted that it would cap new generic top-level domains (gTLDs) at 1,000 for this first round of creation. It also reported that the application fee for each desired gTLD would be $185,000. Some quick math shows that Amazon forked over $14 million for a shot at bringing you sites like www.amazon.smile and www.amazon.silk . Why?
